Most people stride thoughtlessly past them in the woods. But the world of ferns is incredibly exciting! There is not only one fern, but many different species and varieties, which can be interesting for the garden and pot culture.
Next article What care does the fern need?More than 12,000 species
There are around 12,000 fern species around the world. Most of the representatives are found in the tropics. But in Europe there are many types. There are about 170 pieces.
Features that all ferns have in common
Whether bracken fern, worm fern, streak fern, royal fern, deer tongue fern, oak fern, beech fern, spotted fern, thorn fern, ... all fern species are among the vascular spore plants. They do not produce flowers or fruits. They multiply through their spores, which are usually on their foliage underside.
Furthermore, the majority of ferns love shady and humid locations. Their natural occurrence is among other forests, rock crevices, riparian zones and cracks. Due to the easy-to-fulfill site requirements many gardeners plant ferns in their green spot. Furthermore, ferns are popular as indoor plants.
Other features common to most ferns are:
Small, medium and large fern species
The small fern species are between 10 and 30 cm high. They are ideal as ground cover, for example under coniferous trees and for greening of rockeries. These include, among others, the brown, the brown streak fern, the Tierra del Fuego (a 10 cm high fern) and the fern.
Medium-sized ferns are between 40 and 80 cm high. They are cuddly on roadsides, under tall trees like trees and in the bed. Representatives of this size category are for example the ostrich fern and the common worm fern with its three-feathered fronds. The large fern species tower up to 2 m high. These include the tree fern, highly poisonous bracken and the royal fern.
