You have no garden or this covers only a few square meters? No problem, because most types of herbs can be wonderfully cultivated in a variety of planters and put on the terrace. This is especially true for many an exotic species, which is not sufficiently hardy in our climate and therefore has to overwinter anyway frost-free.

However, there is still a good reason for the pot garden on the sunlit terrace: In this way, the numerous scents and aromas always directly in the nose. Some herbs even have very special advantages: Scented geraniums (also known as scented geraniums) reliably keep away mosquitoes, for example. Other ideas for the herb garden on the terrace: Group different, intensely scented Mediterranean herbs such as sage, lavender, hyssop and mountain savory around the seating and enjoy the scent of summer, sun and sea. In order to make the most of the scarce space, place traffic lights with hanging herbs such as hangsosmarin, savory, some oregano and thyme, as well as nasturtium.
Cultivate herbs in pots
First of all, you should make sure that the potted herbs on the terrace have the light and location conditions that they need in the field. Most species prefer a sunny location so they can fully develop their flavor. However, there are some herbs that feel good even on shadier spots.Moreover, do not simply plant your herbs in any of these containers, as these are also an excellent design element: clay and terracotta underline a Mediterranean flair very well, but also allow a lot of water to evaporate and are not always frost hardy. On the other hand, glazed ceramic pots with Asian motifs match a Far Eastern style and corresponding aromatic plants. The glaze reduces the loss of water. Many other herbs can also be cultivated very well in rustic wooden troughs or foil-lined wicker baskets. These are winter proof, but weather over time. For the terrace also heavy stone troughs are very good.
Maintain potted herbs properly
However, for which planters you decide: Due to the very limited amount of substrate, the plants can not provide themselves and are therefore dependent on a careful care. Pour and fertilize the herbs depending on the species and also ensure that excess irrigation water can always drain through drain holes in the bottom of the pot.
Tips
Even hardy herbs need winter protection if they are cultivated in a pot. Otherwise, the soil freezes too quickly and the plant enters.
