Herbs sometimes have quite different demands on location and soil. Sun-hungry and warm-loving species like mostly lean soil, others prefer moist, humus soils and partial shade.
Every herb has different preferences
Mediterranean herbs like sage, thyme, rosemary, rue and lavender love heat, dryness and full sun. That's why they get the warmest and driest place in the garden. In addition, these species are slightly sensitive to frost and should therefore be somewhat protected. Other herbs need neutral, humus and fresh soils. They grow best in mixed culture in the garden bed. These include, for example, cumin, fennel, borage, marigold, mustard, savory, parsley and chives. Mint, on the other hand, likes moist soil and partial shade. Subtropical species such as lemon grass, ginger, basil or chilli need a slight shade, but also a lot of heat. They are best kept in a warm greenhouse or conservatory.
Tips
Especially lovage and angelica grow into huge, shadow-casting plants, and also need a lot of nutrients and moisture. They are best housed in a private bed.
