The sweet cherry and sour cherry trees have a different growth character. While the sweet cherry grows strongly upright and forms a pronounced step-shaped crown, the sour cherry gladly branches and gets a variety of long shoots. Therefore, a regular fruit woodcut is required for the sour cherry, while the sweet cherry only a planting and a renewal cut in due course.

The right time for the pruning
Cherry tree trimming takes place in August-September (summer cut) or from the beginning of March (winter cut), depending on whether you want to promote growth or slow down. The pruning in the spring has the advantage that the tree is still unbelaubt and therefore offers a better overview.
Tips & Tricks
It is recommended to coat the incision wound with wound closure material if the cut surface is larger than 4 cm in diameter or if it was cut in the dormant period, as no new tissue can form during this time and the wound otherwise dries out completely.
