Unfortunately, the pokeweed is also considered poisonous, the American pokeweed but more than the Asian. In a family garden they both do not necessarily belong, because for young children, the consumption can quickly become dangerous. You get indigestion, such as nausea, diarrhea or vomiting, in bad cases cramps.
Even outside the reach of small children you should rather plant the Asian pokeweed. It is sometimes referred to as edible pokeweed, but this is only partially true. The toxic ingredients lose their effectiveness at least partially when heated, but raw and especially in the immature state, the berries are inedible.
How do I care for the pokeweed?
The pokeweed is quite undemanding and easy to clean. Give her some compost or a long-term fertilizer in the spring. The water requirement is not very big, but the plant likes a slightly moist soil. If she feels comfortable at her location, then she is very prolific and can be difficult to fight.
Plant your pokeweed in a warm and bright place. She likes it sunny or partially shaded. It places no particular demands on the soil, but it is allowed to be nutrient-rich and slightly moist. From June, the pokeweed then shows its mostly whitish flowers from which develop dark red to black berries in September and October.
