Iris have subterranean nodular rhizomes that store a lot of moisture and energy. The leaves are depending on subspecies between 30 and 80 inches high. The flower stems open large single flowers in colorful shapes.

When choosing a location, you should always look for a sunny spot. However, the plants of the following subgroups have different moisture requirements:

How deep do irises have to be planted?
Especially during the new planting and when splitting for propagation purposes you should pay attention to the correct planting depth of the iris rhizomes. Do not put them too deep in the soil, as this can otherwise lead to the formation of rot on the leaf roots and flower stalks. The correct planting depth is given if the upper end of the rhizomes is still visible slightly above the ground.

It is possible to grow the iris from seeds and sometimes necessary for exotic and rare varieties. But if you already have mature specimens in the garden, propagation by division is the less time-consuming and faster way. Remove flowering the flowers if you do not want to self-seed the seeds.
