Some vegetables can still be harvested very late
Thus, the raised bed can also be used in winter
Fresh vegetables, aromatic herbs and bright flowers in all colors can be harvested in the summer from the raised bed. But even during the cold season, there are some frosty vegetables that can be harvested fresh.
Raised beds or film tunnels extend gardening season
Planted under foil or glass grow faster and more evenly than conventionally grown crops thanks to the heated and moisture-saturated air. In addition, it is possible to harvest fresh vegetables earlier in the spring and some weeks in the autumn in the autumn. With the help of a film tunnel or even a greenhouse attachment, you can even harvest crisp lamb's lettuce or spicy parsnip in winter.
You can still grow these vegetables in winter
There are a number of vegetables that you can still leave in the bed in the winter and only need to harvest when needed. They can not harm cold and frost, in some they are even decisive for the good taste. But here too, growth is extremely slow in winter, so that the listed plants must be brought forward in the summer.
winter leeks
If you want to harvest leeks in winter, you should choose explicit winter varieties such as 'Blue-green winter', 'Fahrenheit' or 'Pluston'. Other cultivars are bred for cultivation in summer and fall and are therefore only partially hardy. Winterporree is sown in July, either directly into the bed (rather unfavorable, because the space can also be used elsewhere) or in pots.
Lamb's lettuce
Corn salad, also known as winter salad or rapunzel, is the ideal vegetable for a second crop. Sow the seeds between mid-July and mid-September to provide fresh greenery during the cold months. Semen released in November ensures a spring-harvest rich in vitamins.
parsnips
Parsnips are sown and pulled directly into the bed in May, but can stay there throughout the winter. The roots are resistant to frost and the perfect winter vegetables.
winter spinach
Winter spinach is best planted between September to the beginning / middle of October as a postculture directly into the bed.
sprouting broccoli
Winter or sprouts broccoli is preferred and placed in the bed as a seedling in autumn. However, it takes half a year to harvest: between March and May, you can finally harvest the delicate roses.
Kale
Kale should, depending on the variety, be brought forward between mid-April and mid-May and set in the raised bed by mid-July at the latest. The cabbage is then harvested after the first heavy frosts between November and January.
Tips
If you decide to hibernate your raised bed and rest until spring, cover it with a mulch layer of semi-mature compost, leaves, brushwood or dark foil. This will prevent the valuable nutrients from being washed out.
