What belongs to good succulent soil?
Succulents are unfamiliar with the nutrient-rich soil of our gardens. In their natural habitat, the frugal plants thrive in dry, dry soil. Consequently, normal potting soil also does not meet the demands of the ideal succulent soil. Read here how the right substrate should be put together.
Succulent soil simulates natural conditions
Most succulent species thrive in desert-like conditions with lots of sun and little rainfall. The soil in their habitats contains only a small amount of humus. Here, inorganic, mineral components such as sand and stones dominate. Specialist Succulent Soil is therefore offered with a different composition than conventional potting soil. If you would like to mix the substrate yourself, the following recipes have proven themselves in practice:
For the cultivation of large succulents, we recommend the addition of loamy garden soil to give the substrate additional stability. For the cultivation of leaf cacti, such as Schlumbergera, from the tropical rainforest, the content of humus may be slightly higher.
The ideal substrate should be dimensionally stable and at the same time well-drained. In the end, do a stability test to put these two key criteria to the test. To do this, hold the succulent soil in one hand and squeeze it together. This pressed shape should only briefly hold the substrate and then fall apart when you open your hand.
Tips
With the addition of simple soil additives, you turn fat, nutritious garden soil into permeable, lean succulent soil. So that winter-hardy succulents thrive outside in the garden, mix a few handfuls of quartz sand, fine-grained chippings or lava granules as part of the planting process.
