Autumn anemones - the right place for rich flowering

Autumn anemones (Anemone hupehensis or Anemone tomentosa) like it as sunny as possible. In the semi-shade they form fewer flowers and the bushes are not so compact. The perennials also grow under light trees, but the flowers tend here in the direction of the light.

The right location for the autumn anemone.

Autumn anemones are also called anemones. Nevertheless, they do not like cold winds at all. Protect the delicate perennials by providing a windbreak or planting them in front of a wall.

The soil should be well water permeable and nutrient rich. It should be carefully chopped regularly to keep the surface free of weeds and not too dense. When chopping, be careful not to damage the roots and especially the small shoots.

Never plant under conifers

The soil under conifers has a very low pH. By dropping needles, the soil is additionally acidified. Autumn anemones can not develop properly.

Cultivate autumn anemones in the perennial border or as a single plant?

If you want to plant your perennial border with autumn anemones, you should choose varieties of the Anemone tomentosa. The autumn anemones get along better with a half-sided shading.

By contrast, descendants of the anemone hupehensis grow better as a specimen plant. Plant them in a place where the perennials receive light from all sides. At fences this variety is doing especially well.

Tips & Tricks

In order to reach their full stature height, autumn anemones should stand at a site for at least two years. Only then are they really hardy and no longer need winter protection.
