The hemlock is a tall tree with horizontally alert branches, which is usually branched irregularly. The evergreen tree is frost hardy and cut tolerant. In the spring before budding is a good time to perform cutting measures.

General cutting instructions
The hemlock is considered an easy-care, particularly cut-friendly tree. Nevertheless, one should not cut into the perennial wood if possible. Branches that are more than four years old usually have a hesitant sprouting after cutting or are completely absent. It is preferable to cut before the shoot in the period between February and April. A possibly required second cut, for example in hemlock hedges, can also take place in the course of the summer. It is better to choose a covered day.

The hemlock can grow about 50 cm per year under good conditions. Older trees grow slower. Tsuga heterophylla is a much brighter species than Tsuga canandensis.
