Plant hanging geraniums properly - That's how it works
Hanging geraniums - which are really called hanging pelargoniums - are among the most popular balcony flowers. No wonder, the plants that thrive on growth and flowering delight every balcony gardener with their lush flowers. So that this also turns out as hoped, you should already observe some rules when planting.
Select location and substrate correctly
Before planting, however, the choice of the right site and substrate is first and foremost - both are essential for the well-being of your plants. Hanging geraniums need a lot of sun - the sunnier their location, the more flowers you can expect. At the same time, however, the plants should be protected against unfavorable weather conditions. In particular, frequent rain causes the flowers are unsightly. In terms of substrate, you should choose a nutrient-rich and well-drained soil. Very suitable is, for example, special geranium soil, which you can also mix yourself:
Optimal timing
Even the right time of implantation is immensely important for hanging geraniums; they do not tolerate frost and should therefore be planted after the ice sacs at the earliest. Previously, it makes sense to put the plants only for curing in the open air during the day and bring them into the house overnight. The right temperature is also crucial, because at less than 10 ° C, hanging geraniums stop growing. The plants prefer a lot of heat during the growing season.
Pay attention to a good drainage
If the three important questions - location, substrate, time - are clarified in advance, it can now go to planting the hanging geraniums. Here, the drainage in the planter is one of the most important points, after all, hanging geraniums do not tolerate waterlogging.
In the case of pre-fertilized geranium soil, fertilization is not necessary for the next six to eight weeks.
Tips
Hanging geraniums are often packed with a supporting plastic frame. In order to free the plant from it without damage, you should cut open the struts all around.
