Pour hanging geraniums properly
With regard to their water needs, hanging geraniums are quite divided: Originally, the popular summer flowers come from the dry and hot climate of Southeast Africa and are therefore quite used to prolonged periods of drought. Short-term dry phases do not harm the plants and they must not be exposed to too much moisture.On the other hand, hanging geraniums are also quite thirsty plants that want to be well watered especially on hot and dry days. In addition to high humidity, you should also avoid waterlogging or constantly wet substrate.
Fertilize hanging geraniums regularly
In addition, hanging geraniums are pronounced heavy-eaters and should therefore be fertilized regularly. A special plant fertilizer is suitable for this purpose, but conventional flowering plant fertilizer fulfills the same purpose. Fertilization is best when watering. Make sure that the substrate is wet, otherwise the roots could be damaged.
The right time to cut the hanging geraniums
Many hanging geranium varieties are self-cleaning, d. H. withered shoots do not need to be plastered. For other hanging geraniums, however, this measure is quite useful to encourage the development of new flowers. Otherwise, a strong pruning takes place before storage in the winter quarters and another - to remove water shoots - in early spring.
Diseases in hanging geraniums
Especially in damp weather or too frequent watering hanging geraniums tend to certain diseases. Mildew, gray mold, pelargonium rust or bacterial wilt often occur. As soon as you notice the first signs of these plant diseases, which are often caused by fungi or bacteria, you should act as soon as possible - cut off affected areas and make the infested plants drier.

White flies, thrips or aphids feel particularly comfortable on hanging geraniums. If the infestation is noticed in time, you can dam it with a proven home remedy: Treat the affected leaves and shoots with a mixture of 500 ml of water, a strong dash of detergent (possibly with citrus scent) and two tablespoons of cooking oil.

Hanging geraniums should never overwinter outdoors. The plants are not hardy, but can - strong cut back and without soil - in the cool and dark cellar easily survive the cold season.
Tips
