Why does the money tree lose leaves and branches?
A money tree comes out with very little water and fertilizer. Forget many gardening friends and pour the money tree too often. As a result, it often happens that the houseplant loses leaves and branches. While the fall of the leaves themselves is not that dramatic, soft, sloping branches are an indication that the money tree is very bad.
Too much moisture damages the money tree
The most common reason for deciduous leaves and branches is too much moisture. As succulents, penny-bunches like to be dry, light and warm.
If the roots are in waterlogging, they begin to rot and thus can no longer absorb water. At first the leaves soften and fall off. Later, this also affects the branches that curl up and then fall off as well.
With falling branches of the money tree is often already beyond saving.
What to do if the leaves fall off?
Even if the leaves fall, you should see if the substrate of the houseplant is too moist. Always pour a money tree only when the topmost layers of earth are completely dry. Pour out excess irrigation water from the saucer as equal as possible.
Often it is sufficient if you provide the money tree with water only every three weeks. Some hobby gardeners only water their money tree when the leaves are slightly wrinkled.
Is the money tree still to save?
It becomes problematic if the branches of the money tree also soften and fall off. Then you can assume that the plant has stood in waterlogging or that lice have infested them.
Cut off all soft and rotten branches. Take the plant out of the pot and see if the roots are still healthy. If so, you can try repotting the money tree.
If you have a pest infestation, you should take immediate action to save the money tree.
Tips
Soft and deciduous branches often appear when the money tree is in a too humid place outside in summer. Put it in a sunny but covered position so that it does not stand in waterlogging even after heavy downpours.
