Should one cut off old inflorescences at Oleander?
The oleander, originally located in the river meadows around the Mediterranean, is a popular container plant for terrace and balcony. The shrub flowers very lush and long-lasting: From June to September, the most white, red, pink or even yellow flowers are admired.
Do not cut off blooming inflorescences
For many flowering shrubs, flowers should be removed to stimulate the plant again and again to form new flowers. Not so with the oleander: Since the plants for new ones are already at the top of the old blossoms, you would also cut off the new blossoms with the removal of withered shoots. Therefore you leave the fragrant better on the bush; In addition, dried flowers will fall off after a while anyway. Only the bean capsules should be removed as their formation costs the plant a lot of power.
Tips
Check your oleander regularly for signs of infection, such as Pseudomonas or Ascochyta; these infest prefer infested shoots. In case of illness, infected parts of the plant should be cut back.
