Also garden owners take their annual vacation during the beautiful summer months. But who supplies the plants during this time? And if nobody has time or the paths are too far - how can the garden be best prepared for absence and the lack of care? With our tips, your garden will look good even after a long absence.
Garden to prepare optimally for the holiday
It goes without saying that you do not just drive away without any preparation. Instead, there are a few measures to prepare the plants in the garden for an absence and thus to create buffer in advance for a few days. This necessarily includes the following activities:
Under no circumstances should you fertilize before you leave! This strongly stimulates the growth and metabolism of the plants and thus only increases the water requirement.
Engage plant sitter
The easiest way to irrigate the plants while they are on vacation is by plant sitter - neighbors, friends or family members who take care of the garden and can thank them for vegetables and fruits and maybe get a nice souvenir from a trip. Make sure that your vacation replacement does not have too long a journey and at best leave detailed instructions (eg pour the cucumber bed every day, the roses only every two days!). If you have no neighbors or the family lives too far away, you can also pay someone for the job. Pupils or students are usually happy about a small additional income.
Install automatic irrigation system
If no one is available, more of an absence lasting several weeks is just the installation of an automatic irrigation system. However, this usually requires water and electricity, as simple electroless irrigation systems, as you might know from potted or balcony plants, do not work in this case. Do not choose a sprinkler system (unless you just want to water the lawn), but a drip irrigation system. Finally, the leaves of perennials, shrubs, ornamentals and crops should not get wet.
Tips
If possible, shade plants in very sunny locations. This also reduces the water requirement considerably.
