Forsythia thrive even in nutrient-poor soil and therefore rarely need fertilizer
Fertilization is superfluous in forsythia
Forsythia are real all-rounders. They grow on almost every garden soil, tolerate sun and shade alike. Additional fertilizer inputs are not necessary. At most, an occasional fertilizer for forsythia in the bucket may be useful.
Forsythia are undemanding
Forsythia has no special demands on the soil. They also thrive well when the plant substrate is lean.
To ensure the nutrient supply, you should properly prepare the planting hole before planting.
Prepare planting hole
Pick up a hole twice the size of the forsythia ball. Loosen the soil and mix some mature compost or horn shavings. More is not necessary to allow the plant to grow well.
Fertilize forsythia in the bucket
The roots of forsythia held in the bucket can not spread and absorb nutrients from deeper layers of soil. An occasional dose of commercial fertilizer can not hurt in this case.
It is even better if you simply transplant the plant in spring and put it in new soil.
More important than fertilizer: avoid waterlogging and dryness
While the nutrient content of the soil does not play a major role, waterlogging and dryness can severely damage the Forsythe.
Make sure the Forsythe is not too wet. Too much moisture not only causes the roots to rot, but also favors the development of fungal diseases. For very dense soils, a drainage layer helps. It prevents waterlogging from forming in the root area.
If it is very dry, you should pour the forsythia. The fact that the plant needs water can be recognized by the limp leaves.
Mulching soil in spring
It has been proven to mulch the soil under the forsythia in the spring. For this, a layer of natural materials is spread.

Tips & Tricks
If the soil is already very drained, you can rake some mature compost into the soil after cutting in the spring. Even an occasional fertilization with nettle hives does not harm the forsythia.
