Figs are the first fruits mentioned in the Bible. They already nourished Adam and Eve in paradise with their mild-sweet taste. Figs can be used in a variety of ways in the kitchen: they taste raw or dried and go well with a variety of dishes.

The fig is a drupe

The fig has an interesting pollination ecology, as a result of which the aromatic fruits develop after three to five months. They are like raspberry seeds (Syconium) and consist of numerous small, interconnected stone fruits. The aromatic pulp consists of knots that surround the small flowers and protect the fruit.

In the main growing areas of the fig, the fruits can be harvested three times a year. The flesh is pale pink to red depending on the variety. If you want to eat the fig raw, it is sufficient to wash the fruit well and cut off the stalk. You can eat the bowl. For varieties with thicker skin, you can alternatively halve the fruit and spoon out the pulp with the many small stones. The aromatic sweetness of the fruit goes well with raw ham or goat's cheese and underlines the aroma of the salty foods.

Figs are considered superfood because the small fruits are full of vitamins and minerals like potassium, calcium, magnesium and iron. Through the digestive enzymes contained, they stimulate the intestinal activity in a mild way. A fig does not even make 40 calories and it's saturated with fiber for a long time.

Perishable fruits

If the fig gives way to light pressure, it is fully ripe. The fruit should give off an aromatic scent. On the other hand, if the fig feels slightly mushy and smells unpleasantly sweet, it ferments inside and is no longer suitable for consumption.

Ripe figs spoil quickly: Even in the fridge next to each other, the fruits last only two to three days. Remove the figs from the fridge for a few hours before consumption so that they develop their full aroma at room temperature.

Tips & Tricks

Figs are among the fruits that contain relatively much oxalic acid. If you have kidney problems you should check with the doctor how many figs you can consume without hesitation. However, you do not have to forego the enjoyment of figs, because cooking drastically reduces the oxalic acid content.
