Where does wild garlic grow?

The wild garlic can be found in nature in many regions of Central Europe and harvested for processing in the kitchen. If the site is suitable, the plant can also be planted in the garden.

Find deposits of wild garlic in nature

Since the wild garlic likes to grow in the shade or partial shade, the largest deposits are usually found in the deciduous forests of Central Europe. Basically, it is more common in alpine areas and in the Alpine foothills than, for example, in northern Germany. Wild garlic also thrives on calcareous soils and spreads particularly in riparian forests, as it finds the necessary soil moisture in the long term here. As soon as the wild garlic has found the right conditions in a place, such as a humus-rich and not too dry soil, it spreads out strongly on the forest floor. After a few years, these deposits can occupy entire clearings and hollows in the forest. The easiest way to find the wild garlic is in April and May, when the white wild garlic blossoms rise between the fresh green leaves. The flowers are in addition to the garlic-like odor of the leaves also an important clue to prevent confusion with poisonous doppelgängers.

The right place for wild garlic in the garden

With a little luck and the right choice of location in the shade under deciduous trees and shrubs, wild garlic also thrives in its own garden. The soil should be as humus and always slightly moist, but still have no pronounced waterlogging. Bear in mind when planning that bear's garlic can proliferate well over time under good conditions. If your garden is a fenced property, you need to worry less about the fox tapeworm on self-grown wild garlic than on wildly collected plants.

Worth knowing about the settlement of wild garlic in the garden

There are different ways to grow wild garlic in the garden:

Traded plants and onions must be used deep enough at the selected location in the field. The sowing of wild garlic can be done in summer or autumn with either purchased seeds or the withered inflorescences of wild garlic from the forest.

Tips & Tricks

After sowing fresh seeds, the wild garlic may take up to two years to germinate. After that, you should protect the stock and let it multiply before you harvest it for the kitchen.
