How and when should you cut the feathered grass?
In the care the feathered grass is considered undemanding and suitable for beginners. But is it really like that? Especially when cutting you should not go to work blue-eyed.

While many other plants are cut back in the fall, the feathered grass must wait. Autumn is not the right time to cut it back. Wait until spring and let the springbird grass overwinter as it is.
The stalks and leaves act as winter protection
The stalks and leaves, which are already dried, serve as a natural winter protection. If they are removed, snow, rain and ice can hit the root area of this ornamental grass directly. In thaw, it can get wet. This often leads to rot. Then the feathered grass is no longer to help.
If, on the other hand, the parts of the plant are left standing - they can be tied together in a bundle with a rope so as not to buckle - they keep water largely away from the root area. On top of that, they give hibernating insects a cozy hideaway.
Cut back between February and March
In early spring, the right time has come for the pruning. The period between February and March has turned out to be ideal. Then there is only a little frost and the renewal has not yet begun.
Grab the pruning shears, hand-grasp the stalks together and cut off the plant parts. You should cut them back to 10 cm above the ground. If they were not infected by disease, they can land on the compost.
