For some years now, the Japanese maple (Acer palmatum), which is native to the Japanese islands, is also found increasingly in German gardens. The rather small, shrubby waking tree inspires by its frugality and its distinctive foliage, which turns beautifully orange to red in the fall. Red maple has a particularly strong color, which can be affected by too abundant fertilization.

Basically, the Japanese maple prefers a humus-nutrient-rich soil, but should only be moderately fertilized. Too lush fertilization unfortunately causes the beautiful autumn color either unsatisfactory or even completely fails. The same is true, by the way, if it is not sunny enough in the fall, because: The more sun the fan maple can fill up, the more intense its foliage colors.
Prefer organic fertilizers
For this reason, first of all planted maple pickles should firstly be supplied with only a small amount and secondly only with selected fertilizers. If the tree is in a normal garden soil, basically a double supply of compost per year is sufficient. The first portion will work carefully at the beginning of the sprouting in April, the second will follow about mid to late June. But be careful, because the fan maple has its roots very close to the earth's surface. If necessary, you can fertilize until about the beginning or middle of August, but later fertilization should be avoided. This would delay a ripening of this year's shoots before the winter and also affect the autumn coloration.
Fertilize the maple in the pot regularly
In contrast to planted specimens cultivated fanethorns in the tub should be supplied with a good complete fertilizer every three to four weeks in the growing season. Very suitable for this purpose is special maple fertilizer, which is available in well-stocked garden stores. But here, too, applies to fertilization: less is more.
Incorporate compost already at planting
Instead, you should incorporate at the planting a strong portion of mature compost or in potted plants compost in the substrate or the excavation with. A further improvement of the soil can be achieved by the admixture of expanded clay or clay granules and / or coarse sand. This procedure is especially recommended for heavy, poorly drained soils.
Tips
Especially in potted plants and on hot summer days, the fertilizer should be presented in liquid form, such as the agent is added to the irrigation water.
