What does "partial shade" mean?
While the terms sunny and shady are fairly clear, the term "penumbra" is interpreted differently. Partial shade is not the same as bright shade. There is a shadow of light when, for example, through the branches of a close-by tree some light falls all day long. Thus, the perennial does not have full sun, but the whole day off and sunlight.
It is different in the partial shade: Partial shade means that the perennial flowering only a part of the day, usually in the morning or evening sun gets. The rest of the day is in the shade. On a partially shaded perennial shrub perennials thrive, which are more comfortable in the shade.
Perennials that thrive in partial shade
If sun-hungry perennials, e.g. Larkspur planted in the semi-shade, the flowering is rather weak. At worst, the perennial stunted and does not bloom at all. Therefore, when creating your planting plan, be sure to consider their site requirements.
