The seed of peanut is not a nut but a kernel
Although the name peanut suggests a nut, the seed of the plant is a core and belongs to the legumes. Peanut seeds can be used to grow new plants - providing good site conditions.
Peanut kernels grow in pods
The peanut plant forms inflorescences, which sink into the soil after a short time. There the kernels mature in shells, also called pods.
Each shell contains one to three cores depending on the size. They are surrounded by a brown skin.
The pod is dried after the peanut harvest. Then the seeds can be easily removed.
Remove new plants from peanut seeds
To grow peanut plants themselves, the seeds are dried in the pods and only released directly before sowing. The brown skin must not be removed, as the seed does not germinate then.
For self-bred you should get seeds in the seed store.
Peanuts bought in the supermarket can also be used if they are neither roasted nor salted. However, the nuclei often do not germinate because they have been stored too long or incorrectly.
