Basically Enzian does not need winter protection in the rock garden. The flower also withstands very low temperatures - as long as it finds favorable site conditions, as depending on the species a calcareous or acidic soil.
In very rough situations a light winter protection from brushwood does not hurt.
Hibernation of gentian in the pot
Even gentian in a pot or flower box is not overwintered indoors, but outdoors.
As the soil in the bucket quickly freezes, you should place the planters on insulation material and cover the gentian with brushwood. Fir branches may only be used with Kochschem gentian, as they lower the PH value of the soil.
Place the pot in a sheltered place. Well suited are terraces or balconies that do not cool off quite as much.
Care of the gentian during the winter
You may only cut full-grown gentian perennials. Freshly planted gentian can not gather enough strength when cutting deeper.
The roots of the plant should never completely dry out. If winter is very dry, do not forget to water. This is especially true for the flower in the pot, as the soil dries out quite quickly. But avoid waterlogging.
Tips & Tricks
In the field you should plant gentian in early spring. Then the plant has enough time to survive the winter. When planting in the fall, gentiana perennials also need light winter protection outdoors.
