Chrysanthemums are robust and perennial
Every year in autumn, they are back in the garden centers, supermarkets, hardware stores and nurseries to have: The rich in many different colors of flowering, often spherical chrysanthemums. Unfortunately, the pretty shrubs are often disposed of after their blooming, it is actually by nature perennial plants.
Do not dispose of withered chrysanthemums
The robust chrysanthemums can be planted both in the garden - if they are hardy varieties - or wonderfully cultivated in the pot. Of the approximately 5000 known varieties, especially the autumn chrysanthemums (which are also known as "winter blacks") have proven to be very hardy and extremely hardy. However, whatever variety you have at home, all chrysanthemums have similar claims:
When does the chrysanthemum bloom?
Chrysanthemums are among the plants that bloom very late in the fall. Some varieties already bloom from August, others only in October. As a rule of thumb, the later a chrysanthemum flowers, the better its winter hardiness is. Do not be surprised, though, that your chrysanthemums will most likely blossom later than at the nursery: there, the plants will soon be made to bloom with artificial light. As a rule, the chrysanthemum opens its flower buds only when the days are shorter and about as long as the nights. Optimal is a daylight time of a maximum of 10 hours.
Hibernate chrysanthemums properly
How perennial chrysanthemums are properly wintered depends on the species and its hardiness. Winter hardy chrysanthemums ("autumn chrysanthemums") can stay outdoors, but should be covered with brushwood. Non-hardy varieties or pot chrysanthemums, however, should always overwinter under Kalthausbedingungen in the house or in the greenhouse. Temperatures between five and ten degrees Celsius have proven to be optimal.
Tips
Chrysanthemums are also very easy to propagate, either via seeds or cuttings. You can also multiply and rejuvenate older specimens by rooting.
