Plant a yew as a hedge or a single tree - A guide
Yew is one of the oldest native conifers. It is robust, easy to clean and can be used both as a single tree and as a hedgerow planting. A little guide how to plant the unfortunately poisonous yew properly.
Which location is ideal?
Ideal is a partially shaded location. Younger yew trees do not tolerate direct sunlight and respond with yellow needles. Older trees do not make the sun so much anymore.
In shadow, the yew's growth slows down. But it also grows quite well here.
How should the soil be?
The soil may be calcareous. A good water permeability is absolutely necessary because waterlogging is not tolerated.
When is the best planting time?
Best suited is the spring. Then the yew has enough time to settle in the location. In principle, you can also plant them later if you then water them sufficiently.
Which planting distance must be observed?
As a single tree, the planting distance should be at least two meters. In the hedge, keep a distance of 30 to 50 cm.

How are yews multiplied?
Yews sow themselves. You can pull new trees out of the seeds that are maturing in the fruits. It is even easier to multiply offshoots from cuttings.
For this, cut a few shoots of 15 to 20 cm in length in the early summer and put them in prepared pots or the desired place in the garden.
When does the yew bloom?
The yew flowers from March to April. The male flowers are slightly yellow, female flowers are inconspicuous.
The yew is separate, meaning that the tree is either male or female. Only female trees bear fruits in autumn.
About 20 years pass before the first flower.
Can a yew be transplanted later?
The older the yew, the harder it is to dig up the root. Young trees can be transplanted quite well. For older copies you should refrain from it.
How toxic is the yew?
The yew contains taxin, which is highly toxic and can cause severe health problems or even deaths. The poison is contained in all plant parts except the pulp.
You can only poison yourself if you consume parts of the yew. Children should be kept away from the bright red fruits.
The sap can cause inflammatory reactions on the bare skin.
Tips
A yew can also be planted in a bucket, as long as it is quite deep and wide. The care in the bucket is not expensive. You just need to water and fertilize more often, so that the yew thrives.
