The ivy loses leaves - causes and treatment

If ivy turns brown and loses its leaves, in most cases, wrong care - especially wrong casting - is responsible. Rarely, pests or fungi can cause the plant. What can you do when the ivy drops its leaves?

Possible causes of falling leaves

Even if the ivy looks like it has dried up, it is almost never because the soil is too dry. An exception is the winter. Especially in winter, there is a risk that the substrate is completely dried out. Therefore, water ivy regularly in winter.

Most of the reason for falling leaves is that ivy is poured too often. The roots drown properly and can no longer draw water.

Do not over-fertilize ivy! If at all, you should fertilize ivy in the room maximally every two weeks, using less fertilizer than indicated on the box. It is better to transplant ivy each spring.

Pour ivy properly - with instinct!

Although the earth of the ivy is never allowed to completely dry out, stagnant moisture is the death of every ivy plant. Water ivy only when the top layer of the earth is completely dry.

Do not put ivy in the room or on the balcony on coasters where water could collect. If you do not want to do without coasters, pour off excess irrigation water immediately.

Fight fungi or pests

If the ivy throws leaves and you have not poured it too much or too little, it may be caused by pest or fungal infestation.

Examine the leaves and especially the undersides of the leaves for pests.

Throw the ivy and look at the roots. Sometimes there is root rot, which is caused by too much wetness. Occasionally, pests such as grubs or weeping larvae in the ground cause falling leaves.

Tips

Never place ivy in the room directly next to radiators and prevent direct sunlight exposure. To increase the humidity, you should occasionally refresh the ivy with a flower syringe, especially in winter.
