Successfully overwinter the turmeric plant
For many hobby gardeners, the magnificent flowers and their usefulness as coloring agents and spice are reasons to take home a turmeric plant in the pot from the garden shop. If the above-ground parts of the plant finally die off eventually, this is sometimes mistakenly attributed to care mistakes.
The life cycle of saffron root
There are different ways to grow turmeric yourself:
When growing in the field, however, it must always be noted that it is a plant from tropical latitudes that is not frost resistant. For the culture in the pot or in the garden bed, the rhizomes are driven in the house in spring and planted outside at the earliest from May. If potted specimens are purchased as houseplants during the autumn or winter months, they eventually reach the end of their seasonal cycle. The flowers and leaves then wither and the plant retreats into its organ of survival in the form of a bulbous rhizome.
Curcuma hibernate properly
The Curcuma rhizomes can be dug out in a dry and dark manner at about 15 degrees Celsius, similar to dahlia care. In the pot, you can also hibernate in the soil if it is dry enough. The tubers should then be repotted in the spring and sometimes shared on this occasion.
Tips
In order to activate the rhizome in the spring, these are converted into a room with a temperature of around 22 to 24 degrees Celsius. Only when a new shoot is visible, the plants should be poured more heavily and fertilized a little later.
