To maintain your Cattleya tips and tricks
The Cattleya is a South American Orchid genus with about 45 species. These plants grow in their home on trees or rocks and are popular indoor plants because of their large colored flowers.
Plant the cattleya
In the trade you will find mainly hybrids of Cattleya. Like all orchids they need a special substrate as they do not grow in the soil in their home country. About every three years you should repot your Cattleya. Then place the orchid in a bright place that is not exposed to direct sunlight. In summer, this may also be like the balcony or the terrace.
Pour and fertilize the Cattleya
During the growth phase, the Cattleya is quite thirsty, so it should be poured abundantly. In between, always allow the root ball to dry well. After flowering, the Cattleya takes a break. During these six to seven weeks, the Cattleya is only slightly watered, just so that it does not dry up.
Use a special orchid fertilizer to hydrate your Cattleya during growth. This is necessary for every third or fourth casting. In the resting phase, the Cattleya needs no fertilizer. Keep the humidity at least in the middle range, too dry air can promote the infestation with thrips.
Multiply the cattleya
When repotting, you can multiply the Cattleya as long as the plant is strong and healthy. Cut the rhizome (roots) into two parts of equal size. Remove the old substrate and any lazy or broken root parts. Then put the pieces in separate pots of fresh substrate. After about four weeks they should have new strong roots.
