Basically, you can assume that building a boxwood hedge will take many years. Buchs usually grows very slowly, and the speed of growth can hardly be accelerated by external factors. However, there are big differences between the different varieties.

The boxwood is a very varied wood. You will find here very weak-growing varieties such as the popular edging varieties 'Blue Heinz' and 'Suffruticosa', which need for a height of about 60 centimeters at least ten years. On the other hand, the larger varieties, which reach up to five meters and more, are significantly faster. But even these are rather slow compared to other deciduous shrubs with up to 15 centimeters per year. So, to build a hedge or a boxwood shrub, you need one thing above all else: patience.

Tips
Do not be tempted to accelerate growth, for example by increasing fertilization. This certainly would not have the desired effect, but would actually promote more disease and pest infestation.
