Strong difference: the flowers

The flowers of nettle are extremely inconspicuous. They appear in July, cluster in panicles, are tawny brown and tiny. The flowers of deadnettle, however, are larger and more conspicuous. They are white or purple in the purple nettle.

Similar growth
The growth of these two wild herbs is very similar. Both grow upright and are slim in stature. A long stem forms the base on which the stalked leaves stick. The stems are angular in cross-section in both plants.
