How to multiply Alant?
Alant is happy to be self-sufficient, which makes it ideal for near-natural gardens or cottage gardens. In the wild, it prefers to grow in flowing waters such as streams or rivers, but also tolerates a little dryness.
Sow Alant
Alant can be sowed relatively easily like other slow-moving plants. It belongs to the light germinators, therefore the seeds may not be completely covered with earth. It is sufficient if you press the seeds a little to the ground and then moisten well.
You can collect and dry the seeds of your own plants from about the end of September. When kept cool and dry, the seeds will keep loose until sowing in March or April of the next year. If you would rather prefer your Alant on the windowsill, then start already in February.
Share alant
The roots of Alant can be several kilos heavy. Since Alant is a medicinal plant, the root has medicinal power. You can safely remove part of the root from an older plant or share the root ball. Your Alant will recover quickly. On this occasion you can also plant your plants to a new location if necessary.
The best time to divide is either late summer after flowering or spring before the alant drives out. So the plant has enough time to gather new strength until winter or flowering. Carefully dig out the rootstock so you do not damage it. Divide it into two or more equal pieces and put them back in the ground.
To get the new plants off to a good start, add some organic fertilizer to the planting hole. This can be horn chips or well rotted compost, depending on what you have at hand. Water the root pieces well.
