How high a raised bed should be depends on the size of the gardener

Which height is optimal for the raised bed?

Who buys a ready-made kit, gets the size of his raised bed automatically specified by the manufacturer. However, if you want to build yourself, the question arises as to the optimal "What should a raised bed be?". In principle, the height and size of such a flower are left up to you - after all, it's not just about practical issues, but also about visuals. After all, the construction must harmoniously fit into the garden. However, there are some guidelines that can be used to calculate the optimal, back-friendly height.

Body size determines the height of the raised bed

The most important measure for calculating the height of the bed is your height. Most finished raised beds are between 90 and 100 centimeters high and therefore ideal for people with a size between 160 and 180 centimeters. Thus, the recommended height of the bed for persons with 160 centimeters body height is 85 to 90 centimeters, for persons with a size of 170 centimeters at 90 to 95 centimeters and so on. The second important measure is your individual arm length. Usually, assuming you're holding your back straight, you can only reach about 60 to 70 inches wide. As a result, a raised bed accessible from both sides should only be between 120 to 140 centimeters wide. On the other hand, if the bed is ajar against a building or the like, it should not be deeper than 75 centimeters for easier handling, including the edge.

Raised beds with seat edge may be lower

Some people prefer to work sitting on their raised beds. In this case, you should try out what height you like the most. A height of 50 centimeters should be at least given, otherwise you would find it difficult to get up. A wide, flat edge for comfortable sitting is also an important prerequisite for pleasant work. By the way, such a half-high bed is also highly recommended for children who can work standing up there.

Pay attention to the selection of the planting

However, not only body size and arm length decide on the optimal high heights - but also the planned type of planting. Raised beds with a normal or half height are especially suitable for low growing crops. On the other hand, you should better cultivate high plants such as cherry tomatoes in a raised bed with a maximum height of 50 centimeters - better still lower. When choosing raised bed and planting, keep in mind the expected height of the latter, otherwise you will have to take action with the ladder later on for harvest.

How long should the bed be?

The ideal length of the bed depends on the construction of the frame (and its stability), but also on your need for acreage. However, before you have to do long walks around a long flower bed, it is better to set up several short flower beds. In addition, a ratio of width to length of 1: 2 to 1: 4 looks much more harmonious and therefore more appealing.

Tips

When planning the raised bed, do not forget the accessibility: A path of about 80 centimeters wide around the bed is comfortable and allows the use of a wheelbarrow.
