The columbine - most beautiful during its flowering!
Whether it is sown or bought as a preferred young plant - the columbine is mainly planted in perennial beds, on roadsides and elsewhere because of its magical flowers. When does it blossom and what do the flowers look like?
Period of flowering: May to June
For the columbine in May is the main flowering period. Until June, the flowers are usually present depending on the variety. If the flowers have not shown up to then, it could be because the columbine often blooms only in the second year. So wait patiently before throwing the 'shotgun' into the hole!
What do the flowers look like?
The flowers are on long and thin stems. They are high up and nodding. From two petal circles they sit together among others. While the inner circle is pointed towards the back, the outer circle is turned upwards. The following colors may have the flowers:
Cut back after flowering
After the flowering is over, the leaves turn yellow. The columbine looks forward to its vegetation for this year. So now it's a good time to cut it back. With luck new flowers will be formed by autumn.
If you want to prevent the columbine from self-letting after its flowering, should cut off the flowers by July at the latest. Otherwise, the seeds emerge, which ripen from July / August and are sprinkled out after drying in the capsule fruit.
