Cypresses are not only very decorative because of their different shades - the evergreen coniferous trees also provide good privacy. That's why many gardeners plant cypress hedges that give the garden a Mediterranean flair. So plant and maintain a cypress hedge.
The right location for the cypress hedge
A Heckenzypresse needs a favorable location. He should be warm, protected and as sunny as possible. The conifer prefers a slightly acidic soil, which is well permeable to water.
Compacted soil must be loosened before planting. It is recommended to put a drainage layer in the ground.
In very drafty, shady locations where it freezes in winter, you should rather plant a hedge of cypress or thuja instead of cypress.
Keep sufficient planting distance!
Within the hedge, keep a planting distance of 30 to 50 centimeters. Depending on how quickly sufficient privacy is desired, plant two or three cypresses per meter.

Even a mulch cover is a good way to fertilize a cypress hedge. Alternatively, give with special coniferous slow-release fertilizer from the garden retailer.
Cutting hedge cypress
Cypress trees as a hedge you need to cut regularly. Only then will the trees be tight. Younger hedges are cut twice a year, in spring and from August. For older hedges usually a pruning is sufficient.
Although the cypress hedge has not yet reached its final height, you should cut it regularly, by a third of annual growth.
Cypress hedges in winter
Since cypresses evaporate a lot of water through their dense needles, there is a risk that the trees will dry out in winter. Therefore, water the hedge with warmed up water on frost-free days.
Cypresses are only partially hardy. Especially in the first years after planting an additional winter protection is advisable. Cover the trees with sackcloth.
