Sharing palms - is that possible?
Many palm plants form a trunk from which grows the characteristic Schopf. These palms can not be divided, because the main stem nourishes the plant and this would inevitably come in. However, there are also palm species that form side shoots or saplings. You can cut them off and bring in new palm trees from the offspring.
Separate sprouts from the mother plant
If you spit out your palm tree, lateral shoots often emerge directly from the root. If the sprouts have already formed some fronds, you can separate them from the mother plant, they usually grow well. Follow these steps:
The care of the small palm
Cast very carefully with lukewarm, lime-free water. Make sure that the earth does not get too wet. Too much moisture inhibits rooting and promotes rot.
It can take up to three months for the palm to root out. The fact that the offspring has succeeded, you can see that the sprout is driving new fronds. Now you can remove the plastic bag.
Water and fertilize in the first year
It is important that you water the plant only moderately and never keep too moist or too dry, because young plants are even more sensitive than older palms.
It is not fertilized in the first six months. Afterwards, they can provide the plant with half the dosage of a commercial fertilizer every 14 days.
Tips
Propagation by seeds is extremely tedious in palm plants. There are varieties that take two years to germinate and it takes another couple of years until the small plants have grown into handsome palms.
