The cypress gets brown - why can that be?
Cypresses are evergreen conifers, which are often kept in the garden or in pots as privacy screens or as individual trees. If the trees lack something, the needles turn brown and sometimes yellow. Why is it when the cypress turns brown?
Causes of brown needles of cypress
If the cypress gets brown needles inside the tree, this is usually a normal process. Here is not enough light to the trunk, so that the needles dry up and fall off.
If the tips of the cypress turn brown or the whole tree turns brown, it is mostly due to care mistakes. Causes can be:
Too dry or too humid location
Cypresses tolerate no absolute dryness but also no waterlogging. Dryness can be a problem, especially in winter. The conifers must also be poured in the cold season, so they get enough moisture. On slightly frosty days, water them with slightly warmed up water.
Waterlogging is just as damaging. It brings the roots in the rotten. Especially on heavy soils you should create a drainage before planting the cypresses.

A browning of the shoot tips, which was not caused by dryness or moisture, often indicates a fungal disease.

You can prevent fungal diseases by using only very clean tools for cutting. Unclean cutting blades spread fungal spores from other plants to the cypress.
Needle tan due to magnesium deficiency
With older cypresses, browning becomes noticeable because the plants lack magnesium. This is more common in loamy, heavy soils.
As a remedy, sprinkle under the trees Epsom salt. This is best done before budding in spring. Depending on the size of the cypress you need 150 to 250 grams of Epsom salts per tree.
Tips
If the cypress shows brown tips after hibernation, it is rarely a frost damage, even if cypresses are only partially hardy. Most of the brown spots are caused by lack of water in winter.
