Japanese maple tends to dreaded Verticillium wilt
Acer palmatum or Japanese fan maple is native to East Asia, but can also be found in many gardens in Germany as an ornamental tree. The slow-growing and small-deciduous deciduous tree is considered to be quite robust, but can be attacked mainly by errors in care and / or siting of various diseases. Like almost all maple species, the fan maple - especially red fan maple - is susceptible to Verticillium wilting.
Fungal diseases are the result of site and / or care mistakes
Most diseases or infections in the Japanese maple go back to a wrong care and / or a less suitable location. This maple species is prone to mildew and the notorious Verticillium wilt. Mildew is typical if the plant is not watered enough on hot summer days. Also, frequent watering of the foliage can cause the disease, so the leaves should not be wetted when watering. In turn, the pathogens of the Verticillium wilt originate from the soil and penetrate from there into the pathways of the wood.
How do you recognize the Verticillium wilt?
The pathogens of wilting disease are Verticillium fungi living in the soil, which primarily penetrate into the wood and block the pathways there. As a result, the fan maple is no longer sufficiently supplied with nutrients and water, so it gradually dies. The first signs are dehydrating leaves and seemingly groundless dying shoots on previously healthy plants.
What can you do with Verticillium wilting?
Unfortunately, there is no effective fungicide against Verticillium wilt. As the only rescue attempt, you can transplant or excavate the affected fan-sharpets and put them in a pot and also cut them back generously. The clippings must not on the compost, but should be removed with the trash. In addition, you can activate the resistance of the shrub with plant-based restoratives.
What causes dried and / or discolored leaves?
The so-called leaf tip drought occurs in the fan maple especially when the location is too drafty or too windy. Otherwise, brown spots on very exposed, sunny spots indicate burns from the sun, while dry and / or discolored leaves are usually due to dryness or waterlogging.
Common pests: mites and plant lice
Even pests such as spider and gall mites, aphids or scale insects are an indication that the Japanese maple either at its location feels uncomfortable or incorrect care.
Tips
Transplanting planted fanfishes should only be done if there is no other way. Ornamental trees often respond to root damage with fungal infestation, especially with the Verticillium pathogen.
