Pull cypresses yourself - propagation of a cypress
Many a garden friend brings his cypress home from the Mediterranean holiday. Unfortunately, these plants enter quickly, as they do not tolerate the climatic conditions in Germany. You can also pull cypresses yourself. This is how you breed your own cypresses.
Methods for the propagation of cypresses
Cypress can be grown in two ways: by cuttings and seeds. Both methods take a long time and are quite expensive.
The propagation of cuttings is easier and usually more successful.
In principle, it takes several years until a self-grown cypress reaches a height of one meter.
Pull cypress out of cuttings
The cuttings are torn off the branch and not cut. Below, a small piece of bark, the so-called flag, must remain on the cutting. Cuttings are harvested on a frost-free day in winter.
The humidity is maintained by slipping it over with a plastic bag. However, this must be aired regularly so that the cuttings do not rot or mold.
Grow cypresses from seeds
Prepare a culture dish with potting soil. Seed the seeds as thinly as possible and lightly cover them with substrate.
The seed should never completely dry out. Cover the bowl with foil, which you will ventilate from time to time. Make the container bright and not too cool. Ideal are temperatures around ten degrees.
Self-grown cypress trees
Growing your own cypresses takes a lot of time. During this time, the cuttings or young plants must be wintered absolutely frost-free. The winter temperatures should be between five and ten degrees.
Only after several years you can plant the new cypresses in the field.
Tips
Cypresses form male and female cones on a tree. Until seeds form in it, two years can go into the country. The cones open only when they are completely woody or exposed to high heat, for example by a fire.
