Pull cypresses in a bucket or pot
Cypress trees do not just look good as a hedge or solitary tree in the garden. The pretty conifers can also be pulled very well in the pot to provide a Mediterranean flair on the balcony or terrace. What you need to consider when maintaining the cypress in the bucket.
The right pot for the cypress
The right pot should be at least twice the size of the root ball. Since cypresses do not tolerate waterlogging at all, the bucket must be equipped with at least one drain hole so that excess irrigation water can drain off.
The pot should be so deep that you can put in a drainage layer below. This prevents the roots of the conifer from getting too wet. For the drainage layer, materials such as
A good location for cypresses in the tub
Although cypress trees prefer sunny locations, you should make sure that the cypress in the pot is not exposed to direct midday sun for too long. The needle tips can burn and turn brown.
Put them in a location where it is very light and the trees receive morning and evening sun. In addition, the place should be a bit sheltered from the wind.
Maintain cypress in the pot
In order for the cypress to grow well in the pot, it needs a little more care than in the field. In addition to regular watering and fertilising, it should be repotted at least every two years.
Casting is always done when the substrate is dry at the top. Rainwater is best suited as irrigation water. In warm summers, you may need to water several times a day.
Cypresses are fast-growing and therefore require many nutrients. During the growth phase, fertilize them with a liquid fertilizer for conifers every two to three weeks. In winter no fertilizer is used.
Winterize the tub-cypresses frost-free
In the pot cypresses are not hardy. They must be wintered frost-free at least five and no more than ten degrees.
On sheltered balconies, cypresses in the tub may overwinter outside if you cover them well and put them in a sheltered place.
Tips
Cypresses are well tolerated cut, even if they do not tolerate cuts directly into the old wood. They can also be cut into shape in the bucket or cultivated as bonsai.
