Harvest lemons from your own lemon tree year-round
Lemon trees have been grown here for several centuries. If such a plant used to be found in the orangeries, especially in the Orangeries, today every interested hobby gardener can grow a lemon tree himself. With good care, even harvesting your own lemons is possible.
Fertilization and fruit development
As a subtropical plant, the lemon blooms throughout the year. The white, strongly fragrant flowers are usually fertilized by self-pollination, but also a pollination by insects is possible. In addition, lemons are capable of the so-called Parthenokarpie, d. H. Fruits develop without any fertilization. These are however seedless. Part of the lemon seeds is polyembryonic. Therefore, you should not be surprised if you put a seed in the ground and develop several trees out of it.
Lemons are edible
If you buy a small lemon tree with fruits in the garden center, then you often find that the lemons are not suitable for consumption. In fact, you should not enjoy these fruits better because the plant was usually treated with toxic pesticides.However, later developed fruits can be harvested and used without any worries because the lemons sold are usually not pure ornamental plants.
The right harvest time
Just as the flowers are found all year round on the tree, the lemon also bears fruit throughout the year. However, these take a relatively long time to maturity - on average, it takes about six to nine months from flowering to ripe lemon. Ripe lemons do not necessarily have to be yellow, the color is not an indication of the degree of ripeness. It only occurs when the lemons are exposed to cold weather. You can also leave ripe lemons on the tree for many months, the fruits do not fall off overripe or start to rot.

For the fruits to develop, the lemon tree needs strong branches. Therefore, an annual cut in the fall is necessary so that the tree is not verkahlen and its energies can lead into fruit-bearing branches. In addition, since a fruit develops from almost every flower, you should remove excess lemons - the remaining ones then have a higher chance of reaching fruit ripeness and also become much larger.
