Winter loquat really overwinter
The evergreen loquat (Eriobotrya) - despite the similar name is not the local medlars - are among the pome fruit plants. In fact, the apples, which are quite similar to an apple, are very tasty. The trees native to Japan and China are only hardy for us.
Loquat not hardy
As a matter of principle, loquat should not be planted out, but should instead be cultivated in pots. Although the plants tolerate a slight minus in the short term, they can not survive a harsher winter outdoors.
Over the loquat in the pot
There are two ways to overwinter loquat in a pot:
1. Protected outdoors
If necessary, the pots can stand, provided that, in particular, the pot with the root ball and the trunk are wrapped with, for example, a heat-resistant fleece. The pot itself is placed on a thick piece of insulating styrofoam as well as in a protected corner as possible to a heat radiating house wall.
2. Under cold conditions in the house / greenhouse
The loquat hibernates at a maximum of 10 ° C in a bright, but not directly sunny location.
