Are there different varieties of weigelias?

The Weigelien is a genus of plants of the honeysuckle family (bot. Cprifoliaceae). So there are quite different species of this beautiful flowering shrub, which originally came from the east of Asia.

Common to all is the uncomplicated care. In addition, since the Weigelias are also non-toxic, they are well suited for family gardens. In romantic cottage gardens they feel just as well as in parks or in the company of noble roses. The flower colors range from very rare pure white to light and golden yellow and pink to bright carmine.

The essentials in brief:

Interesting about the flowering of the Weigelien

Most of the weigela bloom in late spring or early summer. For this they absolutely need a sunny spot, because Weigelias do not bloom in the shade.

Even in partial shade, the flowering is less abundant than in the sun. If your Weigelie is in the right place, then in autumn you can often look forward to the so-called after-flowering, a second blossom that you can support with targeted pruning.

Which weigelias are particularly interesting?

Even if the tastes or preferences of gardeners are very different, there are some very special Weigelias. These include, for example, the Gold Weigelie with its golden yellow flowers or the rare pure white flowering variety "Snowflake". If you put a lot of emphasis on the foliage color, maybe the weed-leaved weigela (Nana variegata) might be more suitable for you.

With a particularly long flowering time, the dwarf Weigelie "All Summer Red" stands out. It shows its vermilion flowers throughout from May to October, while most other varieties bloom only until June and show a small after-flowering in autumn. Dwarf Weigelias can also be cultivated in the tub with appropriate care.
