Woodruff is known to many as a flavor, but few recognize it in the wild. The delicate flower also makes the herb a thankful flowering plant in the garden.
The ideal time to gather woodruff
The identification and gathering of woodruff in the forest is most easily possible at flowering time from April. The soil-covering plant occurs due to the propagation over Wurzelausläufer before in mass stocks. Depending on their location, they carry their cruciform, white flowers until May or June.
The use of woodruff
Waldmeister was formerly used for the following purposes:
Due to the flowering time, woodruff is sometimes referred to as may herb. For lemonade production, it is now prohibited to use it because of the presence of coumarin, which can be detrimental to its excessive consumption.
Tips & Tricks
Take a close look at the small flowers of the woodruff: they should have served as models for the white cross on the Swiss flag.
