Forget-me-not can be kept in the pot but not as a houseplant

The forget-me-not is not a houseplant

In spring, flower bowls are often sold, in which, among other plants, forget-me-nots grow. At first this looks very pretty. But it must not be forgotten that forget-me-nots are not houseplants. They only stay in the room for a short time.

In the room forget-me-not thrives only for a short time

The air in the room is not ideal for forget-me-nots. It is too warm, the humidity too high or too low and the pot usually much too small.

The conditions in the room favor the pest infestation. Also, fungal infections occur more frequently at room temperature and may infect other plants that are in the room.

You can only reach a really beautiful flower if you forget forget-me-not outdoors. You should not forget forget-me-not as a houseplant.

Is it worth it to plant forget-me-nots?

If you have got a forget-me-not as a houseplant or have bought, you best plant the flower in a bucket or even better in the garden.

Thus, the forget-me-not grows and flowers much longer.

However, it is over after the golden age with the splendor here too. Most forget-me-not plants are biennial and consumed after flowering. The planting is therefore only worthwhile for special species or if you want to try to harvest seeds for propagation.

Plant forget-me-not

If you do not want to plant the forget-me-not, prepare a half-shady location with nutritious, well-drained soil.

When planting in the bucket, make sure there is enough drainage hole to allow the irrigation water to drain off and prevent waterlogging.

Do not pour the forget-me-not regularly so that the soil does not dry out completely.

Forget-me-nots multiply

To keep enjoying your gift of forget-me-not, you can try multiplying it. It will bloom next year.

Cut cuttings with a piece of root underneath and place them in a glass of water. There roots form.

Once enough roots have been grown, plant the cuttings in a pot and keep them in a cool, bright location until next spring.

Tips

Forget-me-not plants bought in the hardware store do not always produce germinable seeds. They are pretreated to flower earlier. Rather, it is possible to propagate the plant via root division or cuttings.
