Pulling the trumpet tree out of seeds - this is how it works for you
Visually, the trumpet tree (Catalpa bignonioides) is an extremely impressive phenomenon, especially if the exotic already has a few years under its belt. The vigorous green, heart-shaped leaves are up to 20 inches long and form a lush foliage, which, however, appears only very late in the year. The orchid-like, white flowers develop between June and July to a magnificent sea of flowers, which develop up to the fall up to 40 centimeters long legumes. These include seeds that can also be used to propagate the trumpet tree.
Harvest seeds only in spring
However, unlike most native woody plants, the seeds of the trumpet tree do not mature in autumn, but only in the following spring. The right time you recognize the color of the pods - as long as they are still green, they may still remain on the tree. You can start harvesting as soon as the fruits turn brown. This is usually the case between January and March. The very fine seeds are flat and have hair tufts. However, trumpet trees do not develop seeds every summer, and sometimes the pods remain empty.You have the best chance after a very warm and long summer.
Stratification is necessary
Trumpet tree seeds are germinated, which must be broken by a cold. Therefore, it makes sense to either leave the fruit pods on the tree over the winter or to stratify the seeds. This is done by placing the seeds in a well-sealed container of wet sand for a few weeks in the vegetable compartment of your refrigerator. Purchased seeds are already stratified in many cases, so this step can be omitted.
