Old pond liner can contain many pollutants
Dispose of pond liner - so you do it right
If an old garden pond is removed or the pond liner is renewed, the old foil must be disposed of somewhere. What you have to consider when disposing of, and where and how the old film is properly disposed of, you will find in our article.
Remove pond liner
When removing a pond, it can sometimes be difficult to get the pond liner out of the pond at all.
After you have cleared the pond, it is often advisable to simply chop the foil into pieces with the spade to make it easier to remove.
Before that you should definitely remove the pond mud. This makes it much easier to remove the film. The pond sludge that has deposited on the foil can be disposed of without problems on the compost, it is purely organic waste.
When renewing the pond liner you will sometimes need to be a little more careful, so as not to damage the pond bottom or to be able to continue to use the pond fleece under certain circumstances.
Pollutants in films
Basically, you must also distinguish when disposing of what kind of foil is. There are three types of slides that can be in a private garden pond:
In terms of disposal, PVC films are highly problematic. By contrast, EPDM films are much easier to dispose of. This also applies to PE films.
Dispose of PVC film
Older foils can sometimes even contain very toxic heavy metals (cadmium, lead), newer films are generally not quite as toxic.
If you have not purchased the film yourself, or if you are not aware of the level of harmful substances, you should treat the film as hazardous waste as a precautionary measure.
Dispose of EPDM films and PE films
Both EPDM films and PE films are environmentally neutral and can even be recycled. Both types of film can be dispensed easily in the recycling yard. Quantities, such as those incurred in a private garden pond, are always accepted there.
Dispose of fleece
If you want to dispose of pond fleece, you can also hand it in the recycling center. It is also not considered hazardous waste and can be easily handed in and later partially recycled.
Tips
