When it comes to pond filters and proper operation, there are often many uncertainties. One question that keeps coming up is how long you should let the pond filter run. In our post you will find a detailed answer to this question.
How a pond filter works
To find a conclusive answer to the question, one must first of all look at the functioning of a pond filter (UVC technology).
The clarification of the water is done here by two parts:
If you switch off the filter for a certain period of time, the bacteria that take over the cleaning no longer receive any oxygen (which gets through the water in the filter to the bacteria) and the bacteria die.
The consequence is that when the filter is switched on again, the bacterial culture first has to re-form and recover. This takes some time - and the cleaning result is far worse up there.
In addition, new, anaerobic (no oxygen-requiring) bacteria settle as a substitute, and unpleasant fermentation gases can arise.
In general, it is believed that existing bacteria die off after about 2 hours without oxygenation. For this reason, filters should go through permanently.

Of course, when you run through the filter and the electricity costs beat accordingly. That should not be underestimated. Anyone who has reservations here should first of all think about natural alternatives.
Ponds without fish stock usually do not need any filtration, as microorganisms, microorganisms and plankton in the water ensure a "natural" cleaning of the pond. If the pond is then cleaned twice a year (in autumn and in the spring before the start of the pond season) that should be enough. However, removing the filter may take some time to regain natural balance.
Tips
As an alternative, for example, a plant filter comes into question. There are also other filter options, as already mentioned, in a natural pond, however, a balance should normally be achieved by itself.
