Can I multiply my Hollyhocks myself?

The seeds of the hollyhock can be picked up from withered plants and selectively sowed. But then you do not know which flower color your seed will get, because the seeds are not pure in color. Even the filled flower is not necessarily inherited.
On the other hand, if you buy cane seeds in specialized shops or in gardening, then you can choose between different varieties, filled and unfilled flowers and different flower colors or mixtures. The variants range from white to yellow, pink and bright pink to red and almost black.
Sow the hollyhock
You can easily sow the hollyhock directly in the field. You have two options. Either sow in a bed where you only prefer young plants to plant them in their final location in the fall. In this case, sow in rows at a distance of about 20 cm. Keep the seed well moist.
You can also sow the hollyhock right where you want it to blossom next year. This saves you from transplanting, but then you have no flower decoration there in the seeding year. Here, the distance between the individual seed holes should be about 40 cm. This distance the adult plants need to stay healthy.
Should I prefer the hollyhock indoors?
Of course, you can also prefer the hollyhock in the apartment or in the greenhouse. In February or March, sprinkle the seeds into a seed pot, cover with soil and keep the seeds evenly moist. In May, you slowly get the young plants into the fresh air before planting them outdoors at the end of May.
These hollyhocks have a good chance to flower in the year of sowing, but they are not very resistant and strong. Mostly they do not survive winter outdoors. Even a wintering in the cellar or greenhouse is hardly worthwhile, unless you cut back the hollyhock, before the seed maturity is reached. This may extend your lifespan.
