Do pansies need frost protection?
Pansies are native to the temperate climate and therefore usually frost resistant. They bloom in late autumn or early spring, depending on variety and sowing time. In frost, they close their flowers and reopen them at milder temperatures.

In mild weather, the pansies bloom throughout the winter months.
Pansies are frost resistant
Since the beginning of the 19th century, the pansies have as their breeding goals not only large flowers and an early flowering period but also winter hardiness. When buying seeds and plants you should pay attention to which varieties have a good winter hardiness. Horned Violet (Viola cornuta) and Wild Pansy (Viola tricolor) are characterized by their particular hardiness.
What dangers exist in winter?
The self-seeded pansies are quite robust. Change of frost and thaw and a snow cover tolerate them easily. By contrast, the wintering of the pansies in the balcony boxes and other small planters without protection is virtually impossible.
Remedy
Even in the field, the experts advise to protect the winter plantations. In rough locations, the beds can be covered with brushwood, a layer of leaves or straw or fleece. Care should also be taken to choose a rain sheltered place for the pansies that spend the winter outside. If necessary, however, should be poured.
Tips & Tricks
The self-grown plants are less sensitive to frost than ready-bought. Especially the pansies offered in the spring are raised in frost-free greenhouses and are sensitive to cold.
