About the size of sunflowers
When it comes to sunflowers, most people think of the giant plants, which can grow to over three meters in size and carry plate-sized flowers. But with the great variety of sunflower, there are also very small varieties that carry even small flowers.
From dwarf sunflowers to giant sunflowers
The gardener speaks of an average sunflower size when the plants grow two to three meters high.
However, there are also varieties that are much smaller or much larger. Dwarf sunflowers can only reach a size of 20 to 30 centimeters, while giant sunflowers reach over four meters.
The size of the flowers
The flower heads can be very different in size. The flowers of small varieties have a diameter of 10 to 20 centimeters, while the flowers of giant sunflowers over 40 inches in diameter. There were even cultivated varieties with a flower diameter of 60 centimeters. However, these varieties are so far represented only in the US.
The smaller the flowers, the more flower heads can appear on a plant. In the case of the large varieties, usually only a single, but huge flowering grows.
Pull small varieties in pots
For care in the pot, small varieties are better suited. If you would like to try to pull a large sunflower in the bucket on the terrace, sow it in a pot that is as deep as possible.
Plant giant sunflowers on fences
Giant sunflowers are also known as American Giants. They can reach up to five meters in height. But they need a lot of care for that.
If you want to grow such large sunflowers, you will not only have to water your plants frequently, but you will also need to fertilize them regularly.
In addition, the giants under the sunflowers need a scaffold, otherwise a slight gust of wind would be enough to bend the plant. Plant such varieties best next to house walls or trees, so you can tie the sunflowers.
